This procedure delivers a broad spectrum of light which reaches deep down within the skin, targeting hyperpigmentation and vascular imperfections. An added bonus of this treatment that occurs due to the heat involved, is that it stimulates new collagen growth resulting in smoother, more even and healthier skin.

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hand piece emits a range of lightwaves that are then tuned and targeted at hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin (the brown pigment in freckles and age spots). The light beam passes through the skin and is absorbed by either hemoglobin or melanin resulting in coagulation of the vessel or fragmenting of melanin pigment. These tiny vessels and the melanin pigment are then absorbed by the body, rendering them less visible. The collagen stimulation is a bonus and happens from the heat used in the treatment.
Very visible results are often seen after only one session, however for deeper correction and lasting benefits, 3 sessions are typically recommended with maintenance depending on sun exposure and other environmental factors.
This procedure has no downtime for patients needing mild correction and typically 1-5 days for those with more severe damage; patients often have the treatment done on a lunch break and return to work right after! During this time, patients are required to avoid activity that will increase the temperature of the skin such as using a steam room, performing vigorous exercise, exposing the area to the sun unprotected, etc.
The Palomar IPL hand piece was designed with patients comfort and safety in mind. It has a sapphire chilled tip that is kept in direct contact with the skin so that only a mild snapping sensation is felt.
Reduction of brown spots, redness and overall discoloration is seen on the skin typically after the first treatment, with better results in follow-up sessions including a brighter complexion, smaller pores and tighter skin.
